This morning dawned … overcast, drizzly and cool. More like upstate NY in August, haha, than what one would expect to find in this springtime desert environment. So we waited until the rain passed, then took the shuttle bus up to the Kayenta Trail leading to Emerald Pools (more on that later).
The misty clouds still hung in the canyon, and the overcast lighting made the colors vivid. Here’s looking down canyon from the early part of the Kayenta Trail …
This is looking across the canyon, to the Red Arch Mountain …
It was so beautiful with the mist on the mountains…
By mid-afternoon it was sunny and mild. Then a light shower rolled in (because, hey, it’s springtime). Higher up on the plateau above Zion Canyon, though, it was raining harder, creating this temporary waterfall between Mountain of the Sun (peak on the left) and Twin Brothers (peak to the right), just below the Court of the Patriarchs shuttle stop.
Some say that when it rains in Zion Canyon, the tourists go home, but the locals come out … to see the waterfalls. We hope to see more waterfalls in our time here over the next two months!
Hooray for you being back at Zion. One day I hope to get back there myself.
