Petroglyph Canyon
After work last weekend, we headed out to the east side of Zion to check out Petroglyph Canyon. It has an unmarked trailhead, begins in a wash and ends in a small slot canyon.
It has pretty pictures drawn by people long ago. I wonder what they mean?
OK, that took 15 minutes, as it’s just 1/2 mile walk into the Petroglyph Canyon.
A little further into the slot canyon there is a decaying carcass of a Desert Longhorn Sheep, which likely fell from the nearly vertical cliffs above. It’s been there 2-3 months, the park rangers tell us, as it no longer smelled. Fortunately for you, we didn’t take pictures to share here.
We turned around and walked back down the wash heading east, just to see what we’d see. Sure enough, two more beautiful and very narrow (I had to take my pack off to shimmy thru one) slot canyons off the main wash.
And a section that had carved rock walls reminiscent of The Subway, except no running water.
After an hour or so, we headed back to the truck and home for dinner. It was a nice way to spend a late afternoon in Zion National Park!
